  1. Dark Eyes

From the recording Tortology

One of a number of co-writes with Mel Barnett from the UK. The track also contains some wonderful saxophone by Alexis Van Eeckhout from Belgium. In the mid 2000s Mel, Alexis and I were members of a magical musical community created by Kyle McDermott called "Mixposure". It was an amazing community of musicians and listeners which sadly became swamped by sites like MySpace, Facebook etc. It was a shame, because it was an absolute cauldron of musical creativity. Mel and I have done a number of songs together including "Hold Me Back" from the Inca Hoots EP and there are some others which are, as yet unreleased, but will appear on the "Collaborations" section of this site. Sadly, Alexis and I have grown apart, but treasure the moments he was prepared to share with me on mixpo.

Lyrics

DARK EYES
(Mel Barnett/Brian Ralston)

Dark Eyes
I can see you standing away
Like a ghostly vision
You barely stay
Watching faces who can’t see you
Busy with nothing they don’t fear you
You can’t see me but
You feel me near
I’m the only one
Whose breath you hear

Dark Eyes
Your shadow dances away from you
It tries to lead
And take you too
But you hesitate and close your eyes,
So you don’t have to tell any stupid lies
You wrap your arms around your body
To keep you warm
To feel somebody

You’ve got a kind of sad face
In another lonely place
Dark Eyes do you really care
That they just don’t know
You’re standing there

Dark Eyes
Lift to me and see
You don’t have to ask
My help Is free
Just look up and I’ll shine you a light
So you don’t have to spend another lonely night
Don’t want to see you reach and plead
See how life can make you need
Don’t shy away into the black
Share my love don’t turn your back

You’ve got a kind of sad face
In another lonely place
Dark Eyes do you really care
That they just don’t know
You’re standing there

You’ve got a kind of sad face
In another place
Dark Eyes do you really care
That they just don’t know
You’re standing there
